Why we need a newer watering truck

Each summer, the Ludington Petunia Parade depends on daily watering to keep more than 32,000 petunias healthy and vibrant. The current watering truck has served the community for many years, but its age and reliability issues now pose a significant risk to the success of the season.

Current Petunia Watering Truck

The Current Watering Truck

  • Vehicle: 2004 Ford F‑550

  • Purchased: 2016

  • Purchase Price: $11,000

  • Current Mileage: Approximately 135,000 miles

Although the truck is driven only about 1,000 miles per year, its age and mechanical condition have led to frequent breakdowns and rising repair costs.

Repair History and Costs

From 2017 through 2025, extensive repairs have been required to keep the truck operational:

  • Total truck repairs (2017–2025): $16,884

  • Major repairs included:

    • Cracked engine head and head gasket replacement

    • Replacement of all rotted hoses

    • Battery replacements and two alternator replacements

    • Oil pan leak repair

    • Transmission control cable and mounting repairs

    • High‑pressure oil injection pump replacement

    • Partial exhaust system replacement

    • Ongoing general maintenance (tires, oil changes)

Reliability Challenges

Despite these investments, reliability continues to be a major concern:

  • Since its purchase, the truck has experienced repeated service interruptions during watering season.

  • During the 2025 season, the truck was out of commission for two full weeks during peak petunia season.

  • In prior years, multiple watering days were missed due to repairs

Because watering is the primary tool used to sustain the Petunia Parade, even short periods of downtime place the entire planting at risk.

Daily Watering Demands

  • Watering frequency: Every morning unless there is heavy rain

  • Season length: Approximately 130 days

    • From planting in mid‑May

    • Through removal a week or two after Labor Day

  • Route duration: 1.5 to 2 hours per day

  • Distance driven: About 6 miles per day

The truck is also used for community events such as the July 4th parade and other special occasions.

Upcoming Repair Needs (2026)

For the 2026 season, additional repairs are already anticipated:

  • New brakes

  • New rear tires

  • Estimated cost: $2,000 or more

Continued reliance on the current vehicle means ongoing repair expenses with no guarantee of dependable operation.

Why Replacement Matters

The Petunia Parade is a defining seasonal feature of Ludington. A dependable watering truck is essential to:

  • Protect the health and appearance of 32,000 petunias

  • Ensure uninterrupted daily watering throughout the season

  • Reduce escalating repair costs

  • Avoid service disruptions during peak summer months

Investing in a newer, more reliable watering truck is a proactive step to safeguard the beauty, consistency, and long‑term success of the Ludington Petunia Parade.
